I/O System
Highly-scalable, parallel I/O will be an important building block for future Exascale systems. In the DEEP-ER project, the I/O subsystem relies on 3 components: Fraunhofers parallel file system BeeGFS, the parallel I/O library SIONlib, and Exascale10.

MIC

MPI

MPI is short for Message Passing Interface, an API specification typically used in parallel programs. It allows processes to communicate with one another by sending and receiving messages.
NAM

NAM or Network Attached Memory, nodes are connected by the DEEP-ER network to the DEEP-ER Booster Nodes and Cluster Nodes providing shared memory buffers/caches. This is one of the extensions to the DEEP Architecture proposed by DEEP-ER.
NVM
NVM, short for non-volatile memory, is an innovative memory technology. In the DEEP-ER hardware architecture, the NVM device is physically attached to the Booster Nodes (BN) and provides local high-performance data storage. Thus, it adds another layer to the memory hierarchy in DEEP-ER.
OmpSs

OmpSs is the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre's Superscalar (Ss) for OpenMP. It is the programming model used in DEEP and DEEP-ER.

ParaStation MPI

ParaStation MPI is a software for cluster management and control developed by project partner ParTec.

Prototype

Demonstrator system for the extended DEEP architecture. It is based on second generation Intel® Xeon PhiTM CPUs, connecting Booster Nodes (BN) and Cluster Nodes (CN) via a single, uniform network and introducing NVM and NAM resources for parallel I/O and multi-level checkpointing.
SIONlib

SIONlib is a parallel I/O library that enables large-scale parallel applications to perform efficient parallel I/O to task local files. The software is developed by project partner Jülich Supercomputing Centre.
